Getting to Kazan


Airlines

Kazan is situated 443 miles (713 km) to the east from Moscow and is easily reachable by plane from most European cities using convenient connections in, for example, Frankfurt (operated by Lufthansa).

Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines are the two international carriers which currently have scheduled flights to Kazan.

The airport in Kazan (IATA: KZN) is the headquarters for Tatarstan Airlines. In addition to Tatarstan Airlines, Aeroflot, S7, and UTAir fly between Kazan and Moscow, and Rossiya Airlines also flies to Kazan from St. Petersburg.

Travelers should note that the international airport is southeast of the city and is approximately 25 km from the city center.

We will organize transfer from the airport to the conference site for basic dates: June 15, 16 and June 20, 21.
A taxi from the airport takes about 90 minutes and can cost around 1000 Rubles (€25).

Railroad

Kazan is easiest to reach by train, as it is a major station stop for several west-east trains. Depending on the train, travel from Moscow's Kazan Station can be as short as 11 hours.

A direct train from St. Petersburg takes 25 hours.

Kazan's train station is located close to the city center, with several hotels, restaurants, and the Kremlin within walking distance of the train station.

A taxi from the train station takes about 10-15 minutes and can cost around 200 Rubles (€4.5).

General Information


Water

Water quality varies widely in Russia. Your best bet is to drink only bottled water.

Crime

It is safer in Kazan than in many Russian cities. However, precautions include not flaunting valuables, or walking alone at night through city streets or parks.

Taxis

In Russia, taxi fees are usually negotiated with the driver ahead of time. Do not use gypsy cabs or accept rides in cabs that already have a rider.

Tipping

Tipping is increasingly expected at restaurants. It is normal to tip 10-15% depending on service.

Electricity

Electricity throughout Russia is 220 volt/50 hz. The plug is the two-pin European standard. Be sure to bring your own converter if you plan to use the other standard.

Currency

All prices are generally quoted in rubles. Currency can be freely converted at banks, hotels or kiosks specifically for tourists. At the moment the exchange rate is approximately 40 rubles for 1 Euro and 30 rubles for 1 US Dollar.

Time

Time is GMT +3 for Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kazan.

Remember to bring any medications you may need. Check with your health insurer before you depart to ascertain your coverage in the event of emergency. Many insurance providers offer specialized riders which can cover emergency evacuation.
